CUSTOMS DUTIES (MISCELLANEOUS SUSPENSIONS) ORDER, 1956.

CUSTOMS DUTIES (MISCELLANEOUS SUSPENSIONS) ORDER, 1956.

The Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by sections 2 and 4 of the Supplies and Services (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1946 (No. 22 of 1946), hereby order as follows :

1. This Order may be cited as the Customs Duties (Miscellaneous Suspensions) Order, 1956.

2. In this Order " the appointed period " means the period beginning on the 1st day of April, 1956, and ending on the 31st day of March, 1957.

3.--(1) The operation of each enactment mentioned in the second column of the First Schedule to this Order, in so far as that enactment imposes a duty of customs on articles referred to in the third column of that Schedule opposite the mention of such enactment, is hereby suspended during the appointed period.

(2) Where, at any time before the date on which the duty of customs imposed by an enactment mentioned in the second column of the First Schedule to this Order became chargeable, a duty of customs was chargeable in respect of the articles referred to in the third column of that Schedule opposite the mention of such enactment, paragraph (1) of this Article shall not be construed as reviving the latter duty as so chargeable.

(3) Where any ingredient, other than spirits, is contained in or was used in the manufacture or preparation of any article referred to at reference number 6 in the third column of the First Schedule to this Order and such ingredient is itself liable to a duty of customs, that duty of customs shall not be chargeable in respect of such ingredient where such article is imported during the appointed period.

4.--(1) The operation of each order mentioned in the second column of the Second Schedule to this Order is hereby suspended during the appointed period.

(2) Where at any time before the date on which the duty of customs imposed by an order mentioned in the second column of the Second Schedule to this Order became chargeable, a duty of customs was chargeable in respect of articles to which such order relates, paragraph (1) of this Article shall not be construed as reviving the latter duty as so chargeable.

5. The operation of Section 25 (which relates to the minimum charge of customs duty) of the Finance Act, 1924 (No. 27 of 1924), as amended or affected by section 8 of the Finance Act, 1937 (No. 18 of 1937), and section 9 of the Finance (Agreement with United Kingdom) Act, 1938 (No. 12 of 1938), is hereby suspended, during the appointed period, in so far as the said section 25, as so amended, relates to the duty of customs imposed by Section 10 (which relates to the customs duty on tea) of the Finance Act, 1937 (No. 18 of 1937).

6.--(1) The Electric Filament Lamps (Screw Cap) (Suspension of Customs Duties) Order, 1949 ( S.I. No. 297 of 1949 ), is hereby revoked.

(2) Paragraph (1) of this Article shall come into operation on, the 1st day of April, 1956.
