I, SEÁN MOYLAN, Minister for Agriculture, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by the joint operation of section 13 and paragraphs (g) and (i) of section 19 of the Local Government Act, 1941 (No. 23 of 1941), and the Agriculture and Health (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order, 1947 ( S. 2. Article 5 of the Local Officers (Irish Language) Regulations, 1944 ( S. R. & O. No. 76 of 1944 ), shall, as respects offices described in that Article in relation to which the Minister for Agriculture is the appropriate Minister, have effect as if " the 31st day of January, 1958 " were substituted for " the 31st day of July, 1951 " (inserted therein by the Local Officers (Irish Language) (Amendment) Regulations, 1947).

GIVEN under my Official Seal, this 4th day of September, 1957.

SEÁN MOYLAN,

Minister for Agriculture.

Explanatory Note.

The Local Officers (Irish Language) Regulations, 1944, as amended by the Local Officers (Irish Language) (Amendment) Regulations, 1947, provided that any person appointed to an office to which those regulations applied, the duties of which were to be performed in or in relation to any part of the Gaeltacht, and who at the time of appointment did not possess a competent knowledge of the Irish language should cease to hold such office at the expiration of three years from such appointment or on the 31st day of July, 1951, (whichever was the later) unless he theretofore satisfied the appropriate Minister in relation to such office that he possessed such a knowledge of the Irish language.

The date 31st July, 1951, has been extended by various amending Orders, the latest Order being the Local Officers (Irish Language) (Amendment) Regulations, 1957, made jointly by the Minister for Local Government, the Minister for Health and the Minister for Social Welfare, which extends to 31st January, 1958, the latest date for compliance with the regulations. This Order does not apply to the office of local authority veterinary inspector, for which office the Minister for Agriculture is the appropriate Minister. The purpose of the present Order is to grant a corresponding extension for the veterinary inspectors affected.
