SOLICITORS ACT, 1954 (APPRENTICESHIP AND EDUCATION) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1972.

SOLICITORS ACT, 1954 (APPRENTICESHIP AND EDUCATION) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1972.

The Incorporated Law Society of Ireland in exercise of the powers conferred on them by Sections 4 , 5 and 40 of the Solicitors Act, 1954 , hereby make the following regulations.

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1972 and shall be read together with the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) Regulations 1955 ( S.I. No. 217 of 1955 ) (hereinafter called "the Principal Regulations"), the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1956 ( S.I. No. 307 of 1956 ), the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1960 ( S.I. No. 94 of 1960 ), the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1965 ( S.I. No. 201 of 1965 ), the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1966 ( S.I. No. 230 of 1966 ), the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1968 ( S.I. No. 17 of 1968 ), the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1969 ( S.I. No. 110 of 1969 ), the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1970 ( S.I. No. 108 of 1970 ) and the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1971 ( S.I. No. 218 of 1971 ) and shall insofar as they are inconsistent therewith alter and amend the same. The Regulations hereinbefore mentioned may be cited collectively as the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) Regulations 1955-1972.

2. These Regulations shall come into operation on the 17th day of February 1972. Paragraph 4 hereof shall not take effect until the 1st day of January 1973.

3. Paragraph 9 of the Principal Regulations is hereby deleted and the following paragraph is substituted therefor.

9. A preliminary examination shall be held once in each year at such time as the Court of Examiners may appoint.

4. Paragraph 10 of the Principal Regulations as amended by the Solicitors Act 1954 (Apprenticeship and Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1969 ( S.I. No. 110 of 1969 ) is hereby deleted and the following paragraph is substituted therefor.

10. The subjects at the preliminary examination shall be as follows.

Compulsory--English Mathematics and Latin.

Optional--any three subjects from History, Geography, Greek, a modern language (other than Irish) approved by the Court of Examiners, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Commerce (which is comprised of four sections namely economics, business organisation, accountancy and economic history of which the candidate will take two sections only).

5. Paragraph 12 of the Principal Regulations is hereby deleted and the following paragraph is substituted therefor.

12. A first Irish examination shall be held once in each year at such time as the Court of Examiners may appoint. An intending apprentice who was born on or after 2nd October 1914 shall pass a first examination in the Irish language before entering into indentures of apprenticeship and may attend such examination at any time after lodging the petition and memorial mentioned in Regulation 7 hereof subject to the terms of these Regulations.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

The regulations provide for the following matters.

(a) The holding of a Preliminary Examination once each year.

(b) The holding of a first Irish examination once each year.

(c) The increase to six of the number of subjects to be taken by candidates at the Preliminary Examination from 1st January 1973.

(d) The inclusion of Biology, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects in the Preliminary Examination and the omission of Logic and the definition of Commerce.
