PARLIAMENTARY OFFICES (ALLOWANCES) ORDER, 1978.

PARLIAMENTARY OFFICES (ALLOWANCES) ORDER, 1978.

The Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 8A of the Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices Act, 1938 (No. 38 of 1938) (inserted by section 11 of the Oireachtas (Allowances to Members) and Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices (Amendment) Act, 1973 (No. 22 of 1973)), as amended by section 7 of the Oireachtas (Allowances to Members) and Ministerial, Parliamentary and Judicial Offices (Amendment) Act, 1977 (No. 29 of 1977), hereby make the following Order:

1. (1) This Order may be cited as the Parliamentary Offices (Allowances) Order, 1978.

(2) The Members of the Oireachtas and Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices (Allowances and Salaries) Order, 1978 ( S.I. No. 129 of 1978 ), and this Order may be cited together as the Members of the Oireachtas and Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices (Allowances and Salaries) Orders, 1978.

2. In this Order "the section" means section 10 of the Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices Act, 1938 (No. 38 of 1938), as amended by section 14 of the Oireachtas (Allowances to Members) and Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices (Amendment) Act, 1973 (No. 22 of 1973).

3. (1) The annual sum payable under the section by way of allowances for expenses,

( a ) with effect from the 1st day of May, 1978, shall be and be deemed to have been,

(i) in case any such sum is payable under paragraph (a) of subsection (2) of the section, £44,672,

(ii) in case any such sum is payable under paragraph (b) of the said subsection (2), £19,861,

( b ) with effect from the 1st day of March, 1979, shall be and be deemed to have been,

(i) in case any such sum is payable under paragraph (a) of subsection (2) of the section, £45,365,

(ii) in case any such sum is payable under paragraph (b) of the said subsection (2), £20,158.

(2) Article 4 of the Members of the Oireachtas and Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices (Allowances and Salaries) Order, 1978, shall, in so far as it relates to the annual sum which is payable under either paragraph (a) or paragraph (b) of subsection (2) of the section, cease to have effect.

(3) Subparagraph (2) of this paragraph shall be deemed to have come into force on the 1st day of May, 1978.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

This order increases the annual sums payable to Leaders of Opposition Parties where there are two qualified parties.
