GENERAL AGREEMENT ON TARIFFS AND TRADE (DESIGNATION AND IMMUNITIES) ORDER, 1994. |

WHEREAS it is enacted by section 40 (1) of the Diplomatic Relations and Immunities Act, 1967 (No. 8 of 1967), that the Government may by order designate an international organisation of which the State or the Government is or intends to become a member to be an organisation to which Part VIII of that Act applies and may by order make provision for the purposes of section 42 of that Act as respects certain matters specified in that subsection: |

AND WHEREAS the State is a member of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade: |

NOW the Government in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 40 of the Diplomatic Relations and Immunities Act, 1967 , hereby order as follows: |
||
1. This Order may be cited as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (Designation and Immunities) Order, 1994. |
||
2. In this Order "the Act of 1967" means the Diplomatic Relations and Immunities Act, 1967 ; |
||
3. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade is hereby designated as an organisation to which Part VIII of the Act of 1967 applies. |
||
4. (1) The Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the Specialised Agencies of the United Nations approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations on the 13th day of February 1947 (a copy of which is set out in the Fourth Schedule to the Act of 1967) shall apply for the purposes of section 42 of the Act of 1967, and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade shall, for those purposes, be deemed to be a specialised agency within the meaning of Article 1 of the said Convention. |

(2) The Executive Secretary and staff of the Interim Commission for the International Trade Organisation shall benefit from the privileges and immunities conferred, in relation to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, by this Order. |

EXPLANATORY NOTE. |
||
The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade became effective on 1 January 1948. This Order provides privileges and immunities to the GATT and the Interim Commission for the International Trade Organisation which acts as a Secretariat for the GATT. |
