MERCHANT SHIPPING (SAFETY CONVENTION) (COUNTRIES OF ACCEPTANCE) ORDER 2008.

Notice of the making of this Statutory Instrument was published in

“Iris Oifigiúil” of 26th December, 2008.

I, NOEL AHERN, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 4 of the section 2 of the section 2 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1981 (No. 33 of 1981)) and the Maritime Transport, Safety and Security (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order 2005 (S.I. No. 842 of 2005) and the Transport (Delegation of Ministerial Functions) (Maritime) Order 2008 ( S.I. No. 319 of 2008 ), hereby order as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) (Countries of Acceptance) Order 2008.

2. The Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) (Countries of Acceptance) Order 1985 ( S.I. No. 272 of 1985 ) and the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) (Countries of Acceptance) Order 1992 ( S.I. No. 307 of 1992 ) are revoked.

3. I declare-

(a) that the government of each of the countries specified in the Schedule has accepted the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea signed in London on behalf of the Government on the 1st day of November 1974, and

(b) that the said Convention extends to each of the territories specified in the Schedule.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation.)

This Order lists countries and territories to which the international Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 extends.

It replaces the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) (Countries of Acceptance) Order 1985 ( S.I. No. 272 of 1985 ) and the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) (Countries of Acceptance) Order 1992 ( S.I. No. 307 of 1992 ).
