S.I. No. 516/2022 - Road Traffic (Signs) (Amendment) Regulations 2022


Notice of the making of this Statutory Instrument was published in

“Iris Oifigiúil” of 18th October, 2022.

I, EAMON RYAN, Minister for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 95 of the Road Traffic Act 1961 (No. 24 of 1961) and the National Roads and Road Traffic (Transfer of Departmental Administration and Ministerial Functions) Order 2002 ( S.I. No. 298 of 2002 ) (as adapted by the Transport, Tourism and Sport (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 2020 ( S.I. No. 351 of 2020 )), hereby make the following regulations:

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Road Traffic (Signs) (Amendment) Regulations 2022.

2. The Road Traffic (Signs) Regulations 1997 ( S.I. No. 181 of 1997 ) are amended –

(a) by the insertion of the following article after Article 38:

Zebra pedestrian crossing without belisha beacons

38A. (1) Traffic sign number RPC 001A shall indicate a zebra pedestrian crossing without belisha beacons.

(2) Traffic sign number RPC 001A –

(a) shall consist of –

(i) roadway markings consisting of 2 parallel continuous white lines, each approximately 100 millimetres wide, not less than 2 metres and not more than 10 metres apart, extending where there is no traffic refuge at the crossing, across the full width of the road, and where there is a traffic refuge at the crossing, from the edge of each side of the roadway to the nearest limit of the traffic refuge, and

(ii) roadway markings consisting of alternate black and white stripes drawn parallel to the line of the roadway within the limits of the roadway markings described in paragraph (a) and extending longitudinally to within approximately 100 millimetres of each of the said markings, each stripe being not less than approximately 500 millimetres and not more than approximately 715 millimetres wide except the stripe at the edge of each side of the roadway which shall be not less than approximately 500 millimetres and not more than approximately 1.3 metres wide and shall be black in colour, and

(b) may also include a sign of the dimensions and design of sign Type A or sign Type B, as set out in section 1 of Schedule 8A, mounted on a pole of the dimensions and design specified in section 2 of Schedule 8A.”,

(b) in Article 39, by the insertion of “RPC 001A,” after “RPC 001,”, and

(c) by the insertion of the following Schedule after Schedule 8:

These Regulations provide for regulatory traffic signs that may be installed by road authorities at zebra pedestrian crossings without belisha beacons.
