1. The length of the Trunk Road described in the Schedule to this Order and shown by striped hatching on the deposited plan shall cease to be a trunk road and shall be classified as a principal road as from the date on which the Secretary of State notifies the County Council of West Sussex that the new trunk road is open for through traffic.
2. In this Order -
(1) all measurements of distance are measured along the route of the relevant highway.
(2) (i) "the deposited plan" means the plan numbered CSE 205/2/26/02, marked "The London-Brighton Trunk Road (Sayers Common-Muddleswood De-Trunking) Order 1987", signed by authority of the Secretary of State and deposited at the Department of Transport, Romney House, 43 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 3PY;
(ii)"the new trunk road" means the trunk road to be provided in pursuance of the London-Brighton Trunk Road (A23 Sayers Common-Albourne (B2116)) Order 1986(3) and the London-Brighton Trunk Road (A23 Albourne (B2116)-Muddleswood) Order 1987(4);
(iii)"principal road" as a classification for a highway, means that the highway is a principal road for the purposes of enactments and instruments which refer to highways classified as principal roads and is also classified for the purpose of every enactment and instrument which refers to highways classified by the Secretary of State;
(iv)"the Trunk Road"means the London-Brighton Trunk Road (A23).
3. This Order shall come into force on 31st December 1987 and may be cited as the London-Brighton Trunk Road (Sayers Common-Muddleswood De-Trunking) Order 1987.

The length of the Trunk Road ceasing to be a trunk road is a length about 3.90 kilometres long starting from a point on the Trunk Road about 190 metres south of its junction with Mill Lane, Sayers Common proceeding generally southwards and ending at a point about 100 metres north of the junction of Brighton Road (B2117) with the Trunk Road.
