In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by sections 54(3) and 58(3) of the Education Act 1997(1) the Secretary of State for Education and Employment hereby makes the following Order:-
1. This Order may be cited as the Education Act 1997 (Commencement No. 1) Order 1997.
2. The following provisions of the Education Act 1997 shall come into force on 4th April 1997:-
section 1; and
in Schedule 8 the repeal in section 479(2) of the Education Act 1996 of the words "providing secondary education", and section 57(4) insofar as it relates thereto.

(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order brings section 1 of the Education Act 1997 (which provides for the extension of the assisted places scheme to schools providing only primary education) and an associated repeal into force on 4th April 1997.
