(This note is not part of the Order)
Section 50 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 requires an employer to allow time off during working hours, subject to the provisions of the section, to an employee of his who is a justice of the peace or who is a member of a body set out in section 50(2). A "relevant education body" is one of the bodies mentioned in section 50(2), and section 50(9) lists the relevant education bodies.
This Order modifies section 50(9) by adding the General Teaching Council for England and the General Teaching Council for Wales to the list of relevant education bodies whose members are covered by section 50.
Section 50(9) was amended by Schedule 31 to the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 (c. 31), and is prospectively amended by Schedule 3 to the Standards in Scotland's Schools etc. (Scotland) Act 2000 (asp 6).
